You know, as a dentist I have to respond. I wouldn't assume you were using privledge here to get treated well, you just have a dentist in an office system that cares for people. The "death-dealing" systems you mention also have as their opposites, life giving systems. Hopefully that is why your fear is dealt with so compassionately there.

Your post here reminds me of Walter Wink and the idea that any system is capable of doing great good and great evil simultaneously. I think of Christendom here, and think it leans toward destruction at this time. I think demons are in that part of a system that convinces people to hurt others or to ignore the hurt that a system they are a part of is causing.

Once again a great, thought-provoking post!

Hi Mark. Yes, every single person I've encountered at my dentist's office has been compassionate! I am super lucky that I landed at this office when I had a dental emergency a couple of years ago. But I'd invite you to consider why you felt you needed to dismiss and argue with my confession of leveraging my white lady privilege in the dentist office. You might not assume that's what I do, but I'm the one doing it, and I'm telling you that this is what's happening. Learning about how white women's femininity, vulnerability and "need for protection" has been weaponized in the beast of white supremacy over the centuries here in the United States has helped me understand my own behaviors in ways that I am still untangling. It's complicated.
